Japan Engages China, Russia in Tech Innovation Talks at ASEAN Summit

Date:

Japan has taken a cautious initiative to alleviate diplomatic tensions by engaging in brief exchanges with China and Russia during the ASEAN summit in Manila. Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi managed to have a short conversation with his Chinese counterpart, Wang Yi. He described it as an informal exchange focusing on bilateral relations and underscored the necessity of ongoing dialogue to ensure regional peace. However, China has refuted claims of any meeting or scheduled contact, adding complexity to the diplomatic landscape.

Additionally, Motegi confirmed a brief interaction with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. This marks the first known contact between the top diplomats of Japan and Russia since the latter’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Their discussion touched on bilateral relations and regional issues, signaling a tentative step towards dialogue amidst strained relations.

Despite these renewed contacts, Japan maintains its firm stance on supporting Ukraine and upholding sanctions against Russia. The Japanese government has reiterated that its international commitments remain steadfast, with no alterations to its policies regarding the conflict in Ukraine.

Analysts have noted that while maintaining dialogue is crucial for managing bilateral issues, Japan must tread carefully to ensure that such engagements do not compromise its international commitments. The balance between diplomatic engagement and adherence to global alliances continues to be a delicate act for Japan in the current geopolitical climate.
