29 Nations Form New Body for Global AI Innovation and Governance

An agreement to form the World Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Organization (WAICO) has been signed by twenty-nine nations, marking a significant step toward enhancing international collaboration on artificial intelligence. The newly established intergovernmental body, headquartered in Shanghai, aims to become a key player in global AI governance.

WAICO’s primary focus will be on fostering global cooperation, promoting safe and equitable development of AI technologies, and ensuring that advancements in AI are made responsibly. The organization seeks to align its operations with the principles outlined in the United Nations Charter, emphasizing a people-centered approach to the evolution of artificial intelligence.

The founding members of WAICO include a diverse group of countries such as Kazakhstan, Laos, Pakistan, Russia, Indonesia, and China. This coalition demonstrates a wide-ranging commitment to international unity in handling the complexities and opportunities presented by AI technologies. Together, these nations aim to create a platform that encourages collaboration and dialogue among its members.
