Malaysia’s efforts to boost economic ties with China are set to see significant advancements this week as Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim embarks on a strategic visit aimed at enhancing trade and technology cooperation. During his three-day working visit, Anwar, who also serves as Malaysia’s finance minister, will engage in high-level discussions intended to foster greater bilateral trade and attract foreign investment.
Arriving in Shanghai on Tuesday, Anwar’s itinerary includes pivotal engagements in both Shanghai and Hangzhou. In Shanghai, he will participate in WorldSkills Shanghai 2026 and deliver a keynote address at the WorldSkills Conference. His visit underscores Malaysia’s commitment to strengthening economic and technological partnerships with China, its largest trading partner for 17 consecutive years.
Anwar’s agenda also includes attending the Fifth Global Digital Trade Expo in Hangzhou, where Malaysia is recognized as one of the Guest Countries of Honour. This event is expected to provide a platform for highlighting Malaysia’s advances in artificial intelligence and digital trade, as well as exploring opportunities for international cooperation in these fields.
The prime minister is scheduled to meet with Chinese Premier Li Qiang on Thursday for a high-level meeting in Hangzhou. These discussions are anticipated to focus on expanding cooperation in emerging technologies, a key area of interest for both nations as they seek to leverage digital advancements for economic growth.
Trade between Malaysia and China remains robust, with bilateral trade reaching $113.82 billion from January to August this year. This strong economic relationship is a testament to the enduring partnership between the two countries, as Malaysia seeks to further solidify its position as a key player in the region’s dynamic economic landscape.
