In a bid to bolster industrial modernization and enhance domestic consumption, China plans to increase its imports of advanced technology, essential industrial components, energy resources, and premium agricultural products. This initiative is part of China’s strategic goals outlined in its upcoming 15th Five-Year Plan, spanning from 2026 to 2030, as announced by the General Administration of Customs (GAC).
Chinese customs officials have articulated that the move aims to provide consumers with a broader array of high-quality goods from across the globe while supporting the nation’s industrial growth. The plan also includes diversifying the countries from which China imports, reflecting a broader commitment to international trade cooperation.
The country’s import and export activities have shown robust growth, with both sectors experiencing double-digit increases in the first half of the year. Notably, the growth in imports has surpassed that of exports, driven by the rising domestic need for advanced equipment, technology, and consumer goods. This trend underscores the expanding appetite within China for products that facilitate industrial upgrades and cater to the demands of a discerning consumer base.
Efforts to streamline market access for overseas agricultural and food products are also underway. Enhancements in quarantine and import approval processes are part of these efforts. Since the beginning of the year, China has granted market access to 264 new categories of agricultural and food products from 79 additional countries. Consequently, imported food now comes from over 150 countries and regions, showcasing China’s openness to a diversified range of international products.
Experts highlight that this strategy underscores China’s dedication to increased market openness and diversified trade. By ramping up imports, China aims to meet the domestic demand for industrial advancement and high-quality consumer products. This approach is expected to create new opportunities for international exporters and global businesses, as China’s consumer market continues to expand and domestic consumption rises.
