Two F-16V Block 70 fighter jets, part of an order placed by Taiwan with the United States, unexpectedly returned to Hawaii shortly after their departure, raising concerns about potential further delays in their delivery. The two aircraft, identified by serial numbers 6727 and 6728, took off from Hickam Field in Hawaii but soon turned back to land at the same airfield. The exact cause of this unscheduled return is currently unknown.
The jets are part of a larger order of 66 F-16 C/D Block 70 aircraft that Taiwan plans to station at Chihhang Air Base in Taitung County. These jets will be operated by the Air Force’s 7th Tactical Fighter Wing and are intended to bolster Taiwan’s defense capabilities in its eastern region. The plan for their journey included a flight from Hawaii to Guam for refueling and resupply, followed by a direct flight to Taiwan. The leg from Hawaii to Guam is approximately eight hours and 20 minutes, with the subsequent flight to Taiwan taking about four hours and 40 minutes.
Initially, the first of these fighter jets was anticipated to arrive in Taiwan this week. However, the delivery schedule has already seen adjustments, originally set for 2023, due to issues such as the relocation and restart of the production line, compounded by supply-chain disruptions. These challenges have already influenced the timeline, and the recent incident could contribute to further delays.
Looking ahead, the remaining aircraft from this order are projected to be delivered in 2027 and 2028. This acquisition forms a critical component of Taiwan’s strategy to enhance its aerial defense infrastructure amidst regional tensions. The Taiwanese government remains focused on ensuring that these advanced fighter jets are integrated into their defense systems as planned, despite the logistical and operational hurdles encountered.
