Sheffield Wednesday are facing a 15-point gap to Championship safety after being placed in administration by owner Dejphon Chansiri. The resulting 12-point deduction drops the club to -6 points, making their fight for survival a near-mathematical impossibility.
The day was described by fans as “one of the most bittersweet” in club history. The Supporters Trust said it was “overjoyed” to see the end of Chansiri’s “financial mismanagement” but lamented the sporting consequences, stating, “It needn’t have ended this way.”
The club’s collapse was forced by significant debts, including $pounds{}$1 million to HMRC, and a failure to pay staff and players on time in five of the last seven months. The instability had already gutted the squad over the summer.
Manager Henrik Pedersen, however, remains defiant. “I have a big belief we can survive in the Championship with this group of players,” he insisted, framing the administration as a “fresh restart.”
Administrator Begbies Traynor is now in control and will market the club and Hillsborough stadium as a single package. They are seeking a “swift sale” to “protect the interests of creditors.”
