Doval and Wang Yi Discuss Tech Cooperation Amid India-China Border Peace Talks

Date:

In a meeting held in Beijing, India’s National Security Adviser Ajit Doval emphasized the importance of peace and stability along the border for enhancing relations with China. This discussion with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi was part of the 25th round of talks between the two countries’ special representatives concerning their longstanding boundary dispute. The central themes of the meeting included advancing boundary delimitation, improving border management, and broadening cooperation across the frontier areas.

Both nations positively assessed the progress in their bilateral relations and explored strategies for maintaining stability along the Line of Actual Control. India and China reaffirmed their commitment to achieving a political settlement to the boundary issue, considering their long-term interests. This dialogue reflects a continuation of efforts following the 2024 understanding between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping, which aimed to ease tensions in the Ladakh sector. Since this agreement, there has been a resumption of people-to-people exchanges, the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra, and border trade through designated routes.

Doval noted that bilateral ties have been gradually normalizing, attributing this progress to the maintenance of peace along the border. On the other hand, China suggested that the boundary issue should be positioned within the broader context of their relationship. Despite the positive tone, both sides did not reveal substantial details about the actual demarcation of the disputed boundary. However, they agreed to continue negotiations, with the next round of talks scheduled to take place in India in 2027.

The timing of these discussions is significant as they precede the anticipated visit of President Xi Jinping to India for the BRICS summit in September. This adds an additional layer of importance to the ongoing efforts to stabilize and enhance bilateral relations between the two countries.
