Mac Desktop Users Losing ChatGPT Voice Feature Soon

Date:

ChatGPT users on Mac should prepare for a significant change. Voice interaction through the macOS desktop application will be discontinued starting January 15, 2026. OpenAI has communicated that this decision is necessary for focusing on more cohesive voice experiences across all platforms.
The discontinuation specifically targets the Mac desktop app. Voice capabilities will remain intact on the ChatGPT website, which works on any browser, as well as on mobile apps for iOS and Android devices. Windows desktop users will also retain their voice functionality. Mac is the only desktop platform experiencing this change.
OpenAI has not elaborated in detail on why Mac is being treated differently. The company’s statement about unified experiences indicates that architectural differences in the Mac app may prevent integration with future voice technology plans. As voice becomes more vital in AI applications, consistency across platforms is crucial.
Users who have built voice into their Mac workflows will face practical challenges. People using voice for accessibility reasons, individuals who work more productively with hands-free operation, or those who prefer verbal communication will all need new approaches. Web and mobile alternatives are available but may require workflow adjustments.
Most technology analysts don’t view this as permanent. OpenAI’s demonstrated focus on voice technology in other products suggests Mac users will eventually see voice return with improvements. The current removal likely reflects infrastructure work that will eventually deliver enhanced capabilities.
