The discontinuation specifically targets the Mac desktop app. Voice capabilities will remain intact on the ChatGPT website, which works on any browser, as well as on mobile apps for iOS and Android devices. Windows desktop users will also retain their voice functionality. Mac is the only desktop platform experiencing this change.
OpenAI has not elaborated in detail on why Mac is being treated differently. The company’s statement about unified experiences indicates that architectural differences in the Mac app may prevent integration with future voice technology plans. As voice becomes more vital in AI applications, consistency across platforms is crucial.
Users who have built voice into their Mac workflows will face practical challenges. People using voice for accessibility reasons, individuals who work more productively with hands-free operation, or those who prefer verbal communication will all need new approaches.
