A Broken Feedback Loop: Why AI Isn’t Getting Smarter, Just Faster

The promise of AI is a virtuous cycle: the more data it processes and the more feedback it gets, the smarter it becomes. However, the reality of AI training reveals a broken feedback loop. The system is being optimized for speed, not quality, which means the AI isn’t necessarily getting smarter; it’s just getting faster at processing low-quality, compromised human feedback.
The quality of the feedback is the most critical element. It needs to be thoughtful, accurate, and nuanced. But when the humans providing the feedback are rushed, stressed, and working outside their expertise, the quality inevitably degrades. The AI is then fed a diet of this “junk food” feedback, which can reinforce its errors and biases rather than correct them.
A former trainer described the shift she witnessed: in six months, her allotted time per task shrank from 30 minutes to 15. She began to question the quality of her own work and, by extension, the reliability of the AI. Her experience is a microcosm of the entire industry, where the pressure for faster iteration is breaking the core learning mechanism.
This creates the illusion of progress. A new version of the model is released, and the company touts its improved performance on certain benchmarks. But underneath, the foundations may be getting weaker. By prioritizing speed over the quality of the human feedback loop, the industry is building a technology that is powerful but not wise, and fast but not reliable.
