Kapp’s 5/20, Near Hat-Trick, Punctuates Historic SA Victory

Date:

Marizanne Kapp punctuated South Africa’s historic 125-run semi-final victory with a searing five-for-20 that included a near hat-trick. While the hat-trick ball was defended, the performance sealed England’s fate and South Africa’s first-ever 50-over final berth.
Kapp had already done the primary damage, reducing England to one for three with a double-wicket maiden in her opening spell.
After returning from cramp, she was relentless. She dismissed Nat Sciver-Brunt, and then claimed Sophia Dunkley and Charlie Dean in successive balls, both caught behind. Sophie Ecclestone survived the hat-trick delivery, but the game was over.
Kapp’s performance, which also saw her become the all-time leading World Cup wicket-taker, was the perfect complement to Laura Wolvaardt’s epic 169.
Wolvaardt’s innings (including 69 off 28 balls) had set the massive 319-run total. Kapp’s five-wicket haul, with its dramatic late flourish, was the ruthless finishing touch on a perfect day for the Proteas.
