Israel Strikes Alleged Islamic Jihad Militants, Testing Truce as Netanyahu Lays Down Law

Date:

Israeli forces struck the Nuseirat camp on Saturday, targeting alleged Palestinian Islamic Jihad militants in the second such strike in a week. While Islamic Jihad denied planning an attack, the strike threatens the Trump-brokered truce just as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu lays down the law on Gaza’s future.
Hamas condemned the strike as a “clear violation” and accused Netanyahu of “undermining Trump’s peace efforts.”
Amid this violence, Netanyahu made a major policy declaration on Sunday. He stated that Israel will have full veto power over the international peacekeeping force, a move he says the US supports.
“Israel will determine which forces are unacceptable to us,” Netanyahu said, having already signaled Turkey would be on that list.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed the US stance that the force must be “comfortable” for Israel and must exclude Hamas. This comes as a dispute over the slow return of hostage remains also tests the ceasefire.
