China issued a strong warning to Japan over remarks made by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi about Taiwan, stressing that the Taiwan question is an internal matter that “brooks no interference.” Speaking at a cross-Strait exchange event in Chengdu, senior mainland official Song Tao said any external power attempting to interfere “will only court its own destruction.”
Takaichi had suggested that a Taiwan-related emergency could threaten Japan’s security and potentially justify military action under Japan’s self-defense laws. Beijing sharply condemned her comments and called for their withdrawal.
During the event, mainland and Taiwan representatives emphasized the importance of national reunification and warned against allowing “Taiwan independence” forces to act under foreign influence. Speakers highlighted historical suffering under Japanese colonization and urged the public to resist external manipulation, insisting that reunification ensures stability while separatism leads to conflict.
The gathering, jointly organized by cross-Strait organizations, also marked key historical anniversaries related to Taiwan’s return to China. Participants reaffirmed opposition to outside interference and called for strengthened efforts toward peaceful reunification.
