China Reclaims Millions of Hectares from Grassland Degradation Through Strong Conservation Efforts

Date:

China has achieved remarkable progress in restoring its degraded grasslands, reducing affected areas by approximately 3.33 million hectares annually over the past five years. This success was highlighted at a national conservation conference held in Inner Mongolia, a region central to the country’s ecological recovery efforts.
National grassland vegetation coverage has remained steadily above 50 percent, while degraded areas continue to shrink. Authorities have enforced environmental laws rigorously, addressing nearly 30,000 violations since 2021 to protect vulnerable ecosystems.
Key initiatives include the effective control of overgrazing in major regions like Inner Mongolia. These efforts have ensured a balance between livestock numbers and grassland capacity, contributing to an annual fresh grass output exceeding 600 million tonnes across the country.
China has also resolved past shortages in grass seed supply and extended ecological support policies to more than 16 million farming households. Moving forward, the focus will shift to developing artificial grasslands, enhancing sustainable grazing systems, and implementing stricter ecological protection to reinforce long-term environmental security.
