Jelly Roll One Step Closer to Pardon: Redemption, Music, and a Mission to Heal

Date:

Grammy-nominated artist Jelly Roll is on the verge of a life-changing moment as the Tennessee Board of Parole has unanimously recommended a pardon for his past criminal convictions. The final decision now lies with Governor Bill Lee.
Born Jason DeFord, the 40-year-old artist has long been candid about his troubled past — spending a decade in and out of detention for drug-related and robbery charges. His most serious conviction occurred at age 17, involving a home robbery where he was unarmed but present. Years later, he was charged for drug possession and sentenced to supervision.
Despite his history, Jelly Roll has built a powerful narrative of redemption. His breakout into country music with the 2023 album Whitsitt Chapel and hits like Need a Favor have earned him CMA and CMT Awards and four Grammy nominations. But beyond music, he’s using his voice to advocate for those impacted by addiction and incarceration.
The singer has testified before lawmakers about the fentanyl crisis and is frequently seen visiting prisons and youth centers, often without media attention. He has donated to charities and used his concerts as platforms for healing and awareness.
At the parole hearing, Jelly Roll spoke emotionally about his journey:
“I brought my community down. I hurt people. I was a part of the problem. I am now standing as a man that wants to be a part of the solution.”
Sheriff Daron Hall and Live Nation CEO Michael Rapino were among those who spoke or wrote in support, highlighting Jelly Roll’s transformation and community service.
If granted a pardon, the artist hopes to travel internationally to share his message of hope and second chances. As Governor Lee weighs the decision, Jelly Roll’s story stands as a compelling example of change, responsibility, and purpose.
