EU Trade Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič emphasized the importance of achieving tangible outcomes before their next high-level meeting in Beijing. The agenda for the talks includes critical issues such as trade balance, investment policies, export controls, rare earth materials, intellectual property rights, and World Trade Organization-related reforms.
The EU has highlighted the significant disparity between Chinese exports to Europe and European exports to China, stressing the strain this places on European industries and job markets. Officials have raised alarms that the competitive pressure from Chinese products is extending beyond sectors like electric vehicles and clean energy.
European industry groups have voiced concerns over the heavy reliance on imports from China, which they argue could undermine local manufacturing capabilities. As a precautionary measure, the EU is contemplating future actions, including the imposition of quotas and additional trade restrictions, should the negotiations not yield satisfactory resolutions.
