Thailand’s ambitious plans to reduce household electricity costs and foster a domestic clean-energy supply chain are driving a significant increase in solar panel imports. The Thai government is preparing to launch a solar installation program targeting up to 1.5 million households, offering substantial subsidies of approximately THB50,000 per household. This initiative is expected to encourage widespread rooftop and ground-mounted solar installations, significantly impacting the country’s energy landscape.
Central to this development is the dramatic surge in solar panel imports, predominantly from China. Between January and July 2026, Thailand imported solar panels worth US$426.7 million, marking an 88.7% increase compared to the same period the previous year. Remarkably, China accounted for 99.3% of these imports, with shipments valued at US$423.9 million—a 107.1% increase year on year. Other suppliers, including Singapore and Hong Kong, contributed minimally to the total import value.
To support this transition toward solar energy, the Thai government is also exploring measures to bolster its domestic solar manufacturing capabilities. This includes discussions with the Ministry of Labour to train workers in solar panel assembly, installation, and maintenance. Simultaneously, the Board of Investment is considering reducing duties on production inputs that are unavailable domestically, further incentivizing local production.
The anticipated benefits of the solar installation program extend beyond just reducing electricity costs for households. By enhancing the domestic clean-energy supply chain, Thailand aims to decrease its reliance on imported energy sources and foster a sustainable energy future. This initiative aligns with global trends toward renewable energy adoption, positioning Thailand as a proactive player in the green energy movement.
